Dangers of Malnutrition in Nursing Homes

Moving a loved one into a nursing home may be a tremendously difficult time. It is frequently the first sign that a senior's health is deteriorating. People decide to make this move for the health and well-being of the individual. In these institutions, they can better receive the care they need to stay healthy and happy. Unfortunately, not all nursing homes assume the responsibilities needed to keep their residents in good health. One common problem includes the failure to provide their residents with proper nutrition.

Malnutrition can carry a number of damaging side effects, including:

  • Depression - This condition is most often associated with an imbalance of hormones. It is commonly caused by genetics, however there are certain vitamin deficiencies that may also be responsible for this condition. Elders who are lacking the proper vitamins, such as B-complex, are missing the nutrients they need to keep the mind calm and happy.

  • Confusion - Many elders experience confusion as they age. However, not all these individuals are confused due to aging. It can be caused by malnutrition.

  • Anemia - This conditioned is caused by a lack of iron. This illness may cause a senior to struggle with everyday life, becoming fatigued and depressed.

  • Weakness - Seniors need protein to keep their muscles strong. Strength can help them in the event of a fall and will allow them to continue engaging in physical activities.

  • Skin Discoloration - This condition is a red flag that malnutrition is occurring. A senior may be lacking such vitamins as C and D.

Malnutrition is a serious problem. The only way to prevent it from occurring to a senior is for their loved one's to consistently check that the nursing home is providing the foods they need to keep them healthy.
