As generations age and become increasingly dependent on the care of their loved ones, many families opt to put their elders into an assisted living facility or a nursing home. While the services these establishments provide are vitally important, you must be cognoscente of the possibility that the staff at any of these facilities vary, and that there is the possibility that your family member is being neglected and/or abused.
Finding a Home
When you are researching nursing homes and trying to find the right fit, there are several things you should consider making your final selection.
1. Go visit the home yourself. In order to really know the level of care an establishment provides, you must go see for yourself. Spend time talking with some patients to hear their opinion of the place. Remember, however, that many of the patients may be suffering from mental conditions that may impair their judgment.
2. Does the place appear clean?
3. Does the staff respond warmly to guests (you) as well as their patients?
4. Is it an affordable option for you and your family?
5. Do they offer social outlets for patients?
6. What is the staff to patient ratio?
After visiting a home, if you feel satisfied with your experience there, take your parent and/or grandparent to visit, as well. It is recommended that you visit several homes before deciding which one is the right fit.
