Kinds of Nurses


Nursing is one of the most famous professions due to its increasing demand across the globe. Nurses are known to play a great role in the field of medicine and health. There are actually different kinds of nurses that do a particular job. Listed below are the different kinds of nurses:

o Registered Nurse (RN): They are the type of nurses that cover all areas of health care. Their tasks vary as well some of which includes: performing medical procedures, administering medication, monitoring vital signs, giving advise and support to the patients, informing the patients of their medical condition and the like. Registered Nurses are allowed to specialize in a particular area.

o Certified Nurse Assistant (CAN): They are also known as nurses' aides, home health aides or assistants, and parent care technician. They are usually employed in different health fields such as hospitals, nursing homes, adult care homes and private homes. Certified Nurse Assistants have lots duties which include recording the temperature of the patient, checking the pulse, monitoring respiration, assisting in meals, answering bell calls and even making beds. They also guide and assist patients to where they are going within the hospital. CNAs are usually under a Registered Nurse.

o Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): They are considered to have less training compared to Registered Nurses but are also employed in a variety of health care areas. They are also able to work in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics. Their duties include monitoring the condition of the patient, administering injections, taking note of all vital signs, as well as applying dressings to injuries. They are also available to assist patients in terms of their personal hygiene.

o Critical Care Nurse: They are special kinds of nurses that specialized and work with patients who are seriously injured or diseased. They are usually assigned in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Critical Care Unit (CCU). They take care and monitor patients who have serious diseases.

o Travel Nurse: These kind of nurses are the ones that travel from one place into another in order to provide immediate and short term support when the nurses are all busy. They are usually accepted full time when a nurses files for maternity leave. They may work for short periods of time but they are paid well. A typical assignment only lasts for about 13 weeks.

o Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) They have the same tasks like those of licensed practical nurses. They give particular medical services such as treating bedsores, treating bedsore, bandaging wounds and recording of vitals.

o Public Health Nurse (PHN): They are Registered Nurses that have specialized in a particular field which is community health. Going to community centers, homes, and schools are their job where they help and assist people with health concerns. They as cooperate with community organizers and work with health related isses.

o Nurse Practitioner: They are also Registered Nurses that were able to specialize in teaching and training. They are usually allowed to perform some tasks that are done by the doctors.

These are few kinds of Nurses available today. Nurses are the forerunners of health care together with the doctors. They try their best to save the lives of people.
